So here we are, Day 3, the final day of the walk. You can read part 1 here & part 2 here. After barely waking up when my alarm clock went off, we had to get moving fairly quickly because, in addition to getting ourselves ready, we had to pack up our luggage, break down our tent, and get everything over to the transport trucks.
Now, I didn’t set up the tent, so I was unsure how easy it would be to take it down but it was incredibly easy. Stacy & I decided to help the other teammates take down their tents since we were ready and they still needed to finish getting ready.
I haven’t mentioned it in the last two posts about the event, so I’ll tell you now, the food was quite tasty. We were served hot breakfasts & dinners plus sandwiches for lunch. For breakfast we could chose from bacon, eggs, biscuits, sausages, fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, cream of wheat, and strawberry blintz NOT all at once mind you, on the two different days. My first breakfast consisted of eggs, biscuit, oatmeal (with raisins, cranola, honey) orange juice, fruit. It’s waaaaay more than I eat on an ordinary day. However, I don’t usually walk 20-23 miles in an ordinary day either. To give you a rough idea of the amount of calories we were burning per day you can say that we were burning between 80-90 calories per mile. If my math is correct (which it often isn’t unless I use a calculator), then that means we were burning roughly 1,600 – 2,100 calories just while walking! Basically, this gave us license to eat whatever we wanted!!! A true woman’s fantasy, I’d say. Well, one of them anyway. Wink, wink.
We had to leave camp by 7:00am or risk being transported to the first pit stop. And this day, the day we had all really been training for all along, was all about hills. At least we thought it was all about hills. As it turned out, there were only two semi-steep hills that we had to walk up. Honestly, we walked more & much more steep hills during our training walks! But one good thing about being prepared, well there are lots of good things about being prepared but in this case, we all made the hills with absolutely no problem!! I remember street names (only because they are such memorable areas of SF) Lombard -though not the famous twisty part- Fillmore, Haight -yes, as in the famous Haight/Ashbury and yes, there were lots of “interesting” people hanging in & around “interesting” shops-, back through Golden Gate Park, and then on, over, and around every other part of the city, and lastly down to the Marina Green area for the closing ceremony.
All the walkers were directed into a holding area where we received a warm welcome from all our fellow walkers – very moving, I cried – and we got a special walker t-shirt. The survivors that walked received a pink shirt, regular walkers received a white version, and staff received a gray version. We also got the opportunity to take a team photo beneath the Day 3 banner, which you would have seen if you looked at the photos. Ok, just decided I’m gonna put the pic here so you can see it…

As expected, the closing ceremony had every single person in attendance crying. But they were tears of sadness, joy, and happiness. Over $4 million was raised by the SF event alone!!!
If you couldn’t tell, I had an excellent time walking, it was truly an honor, and I most definitely want to walk again next year. Although, the husband is pushing for a year off. In fact, I need to say that if it wasn’t for him taking care of the girls so much, then I never would have been able to participate. I appreciate all that he did so that I could walk in this amazing event!!!
Thanks Babe!!
Well, that about wraps it up. Thank you again to everyone who so generously donated! I appreciate you!!!
Ciao

WOW, i still have tears in my eyes! I could never be more proud. You did it, you did it, you did it…. This will forever be remembered by you and the rest of us as a very special, giving accomplishment in your life. Congradulation on a Great Job, well done. You should be so very proud of yourself.
Des – I couldn’t have said it better than John. It truly is a milestone for you. I am so glad I was there to see the closing ceremony. It was a proud emotional day. We couldn’t be happier to have such a wonderous person as our daughter-in-law. You are amazing. We love you much. Vanetta
